ERB COMMENDS CEC FOR ADVANCING SOLAR ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE IN ZAMBIA
The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has lauded the Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) for its efforts in expanding solar energy infrastructure, which is expected to significantly enhance Zambia’s power supply.
During a media tour of the 60-megawatt solar PV plant in the Itimpi area of Kitwe district, Ezra Siamasuma, Acting Copperbelt Senior Manager for ERB, praised CEC’s initiatives. He highlighted the efficiency and resilience of solar plants, particularly in light of climate change.
“This type of power plant, being greener, contributes to a more diverse energy sector that is resilient in energy generation and the effects of climate change,” Mr. Siamasuma stated. He emphasized that the 60-megawatt solar plant represents a significant milestone in addressing Zambia’s load management challenges.
Since entering the solar energy sector in 2015, CEC has made considerable progress, establishing the 60-megawatt solar plant in Itimpi and a 34-megawatt plant in Riverside, Kitwe.
Lizzie Muwowo, Acting Chief Finance Officer of CEC, revealed plans to develop an even larger solar plant, funded by a USD$200 million Green bond. These solar plants not only meet local energy needs but also supply power to neighboring countries.
Ms. Muwowo expressed gratitude for the ERB’s support throughout the construction of the existing solar plants. “The ERB has been a supportive regulator, and their availability during the construction phases of our projects has been invaluable,” she remarked.
