Kumba Iron Ore reaps the benefits of its proactive safety measures
A ‘Leading with Care’ initiative introduced by Kumba Iron Ore has had a significant impact on safety performance. This proactive measure ensures a continuous focus on key safety trends as part of Kumba’s drive to sustain and improve its workplace safety. Notably, the Sishen mine has achieved over eight years of fatality-free production, as highlighted in the company’s interim results for the six months ended June 2024.
“By prioritising operational safety, stability, capability and cost-efficient production, we are delivering on our strategic objectives of unlocking value from our core and positioning for a sustainable future, which are essential for creating enduring stakeholder value,” Kumba Chief Executive Mpumi Zikalala commented in the interim June results.
Kumba’s Kolomela mine in the Northern Cape recently won a prestigious 2024 Golden Quill Award. Organised by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), the premier awards programme has celebrated strategic communication globally for over 40 years.
The project involved the integration of adumo Payouts’ card-based incentive solution into the client’s in-house app. Kolomela utilises a voucher system to recognise and reward employees for meeting safety and production targets.
Previously, employees with card-related queries or those needing to check their balance had to visit the physical voucher office, leading to long wait times and production losses, particularly for truck operators who could not afford to queue.
The voucher value is loaded onto an adumo Payouts cash card, which employees can use at any retailer in South Africa or to withdraw cash. An instant balance check provides transparency and control. It is valid five years to ensure longevity and involves a simple onboarding process to set up.
“This is a great example of how innovative thinking was used with technology in a practical way to solve real business challenges, with the outcome being measurable increased safety and improved productivity, thus benefiting all parties in the ecosystem,” highlighted Steve Mallaby, CEO of adumo Payouts.
In high-stakes industries like mining, manufacturing, and construction, complacency in workplace safety can come at a steep price. From compensation claims to legal liabilities and lost productivity, the financial repercussions of poor safety practices can be substantial, with long-term effects on a company’s bottom line and reputation. Incentivising safety measures not only mitigates such risks but also saves companies a significant amount.
adumo Payouts is a leading payouts and incentives business in South Africa, with a solid footprint across South Africa. It offers a powerful solution to incentivise health and safety in workplaces. Backed by Mastercard, the adumo Premium Imali Card is a prepaid reloadable card designed to encourage compliance and wellness in sectors like mining, manufacturing, and construction.
